Unbiased sensitivity analysis and pruning techniques in neural networks for surface ozone modelling

2005

Abstract This paper presents the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for surface ozone modelling. Due to the usual non-linear nature of problems in ecology, the use of ANNs has proven to be a common practice in this field. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to acquire knowledge about the problems by analysing the useful, but often complex, input–output mapping performed by these models. In fact, researchers are not only interested in accurate methods but also in understandable models. In the present paper, we propose a methodology to extract the governing rules of trained ANN which, in turn, yields simplified models by using unbiased sensitivity and pruning techniques. Our propos…

Well-posed nonlinear problems in integrated circuits modeling

1991

In this paper we study the problem (E) + (BC) + (IC) (see below) which represents a model for integrated circuits. We assume that the distributed parametersr(x) andc(x) are nonconstant, dielectric leakages depend on thex-coordinate as well as the voltage level, while the interconnecting multiport is nonlinear and possibly multivalued.

Type-2 fuzzy control of a fed-batch fermentation reactor

2010

Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the application of type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (T2FLCs) to the control of a fed-batch fermentation reactor in which the penicillin production is carried out. The performance of the control system using T2FLCs is compared by simulation with that of a control system using type-1 fuzzy logic controllers (T1FLCs). The non linear model used for the simulation study is an unstructured model characterized by the presence of non linearities, parameter uncertainty and measurement noise. Simulation results confirm the robustness of the T2FLC which shows a better performance than its type-1 counterpart particularly when uncertainties are present in the co…

Mathematical Model of Unmanned Aircraft In Ground Effect for Optimal Collision Avoidance

2011

The fundamental aim of the present paper is to model the aerodynamic characteristics of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) flying in ground effect. The second aim is to determine the relationship between the optimal avoidance maneuver and the control to execute it. In fact, this relationship is basilar to the development of a guidance scheme capable of approximating the optimal trajectory in real time. In the first part of this work ,a non-linear model is built in order to model the aerodynamic characteristics of an UAV flying In Ground Effect. To use a single model in the whole range of flying altitude, aerodynamic coefficients are modeled by means of hyperbolic equations. In particular, thes…

Thermal deformations of inhomogeneous elastic plates

1995

We consider thermal deformations of transversally inhomogenous elastic plates. Thin plate equations are derived as limits of full three-dimensional models both in the linear was well as in the non-linear case with appropriate convergence proofs. In the non-linear case also the corresponding von Karman equations are formulated. Its is obtained that the inhomogeneity leads to the loss of some symmetry properties at the von Karman equations

A strategy for the identification of building structures under base excitations

2008

In this paper the evolution of a time domain dynamic identification technique based on a statistical moment approach is presented. This technique is usable in the case of structures under base random excitations in the linear state and in the non linear one. By applying Itoˆ stochastic calculus special algebraic equations can be obtained depending on the statistical moments of the response of the system to be identified. Such equations can be used for the dynamic identification of the mechanical parameters and of the input. The above equations, differently from many techniques in the literature, show the possibility to obtain the identification of the dissipation characteristics independent…

Identifying crime generators and spatially overlapping high-risk areas through a nonlinear model: A comparison between three cities of the Valencian …

2021

The behavior and spatial distribution of crime events can be explained through the characterization of an area in terms of its demography, socioeconomy, and built environment. In particular, recent studies on the incidence of crime in a city have focused on the identification of features of the built environment (specific places or facilities) that may increase crime risk within a certain radius. However, it is hard to identify environmental characteristics that consistently explain crime occurrence across cities and crime types. This article focuses on the assessment of the effect that certain types of places have on the incidence of property crime, robbery, and vandalism in three cities o…

Slow-light solitons

2007

We investigate propagation of slow-light solitons in atomic media described by the nonlinear -model. Under a physical assumption, appropriate to the slow light propagation, we reduce the -scheme to a simplified nonlinear model, which is also relevant to 2D dilatonic gravity. Exact solutions describing various regimes of stopping slow-light solitons can then be readily derived.

Theoretical predictions from a non-linear model based on the free volume concept, which were previously tested only with a molten polymer, are presented and compared with literature data of solid polyethylene. The agreement is good both when a steady state is reached in the experimentally explored times and when, on the contrary, the data do not show it.
